Cycling Speed maths mission
A junior real-world challenge using cycling speed to practise speed without feeling like a worksheet.
Quick answer
Cycling speed is how fast you go when you ride a bike, and it's worked out by dividing the distance you travel by the time it takes. You can use this to compare how fast you and your friends ride, or to plan how long it takes to get to school.Learning outcome
By the end of this page, you will be able to calculate how fast you are cycling using distance and time, and compare your speed to others. Success signs:- You can tell how far you've cycled and how long it took
- You can divide distance by time to find your speed
- You can compare your speed with friends or family
- You can use speed to plan how long it takes to get somewhere
Why this matters
Speed helps you understand how fast you're going when you're cycling. It's useful for planning your journey to school, comparing how well you and your friends do, and even for racing! Knowing your speed helps you improve and have more fun on your bike. How it works
Speed is found by dividing the distance you travel by the time it takes. If you cycle 1000 metres in 2 minutes, your speed is 500 metres per minute. The faster you go, the higher your speed number.Examples you can see
Let's look at how to find speed using a few examples: Example 1: You cycle 1200 metres in 3 minutes.- Distance = 1200 metres
- Time = 3 minutes
- Speed = 1200 ÷ 3 = 400 metres per minute
- Distance = 2000 metres
- Time = 5 minutes
- Speed = 2000 ÷ 5 = 400 metres per minute
- Distance = 800 metres
- Time = 4 minutes
- Speed = 800 ÷ 4 = 200 metres per minute
Try it as a mini adventure
Adventure: Speed Race to School! You and your friends are going to race to school on bikes. Here's how to plan it: 1st time: Measure how far your school is from your house. Let's say it's 1500 metres. 2nd time: Time how long it takes you to get there. Let's say it's 6 minutes. 3rd time: Calculate your speed: 1500 ÷ 6 = 250 metres per minute. 4th time: Ask your friend to do the same and compare speeds. 5th time: Plan how long it would take if you rode faster or slower. You can even make a chart to track who is fastest!Common mistakes
- Mistake: Forgetting to use the same units. For example, using metres for distance and seconds for time.
Why it happens: Children may mix up metres and seconds or forget to match the units.
Fix: Always make sure distance and time use the same units (like metres and minutes). - Mistake: Adding instead of dividing.
Why it happens: Children may think that speed is about how much you go, not how fast you go.
Fix: Remember: Speed = Distance ÷ Time. You divide, not add. - Mistake: Confusing speed with distance.
Why it happens: Children may say they went 1000 metres fast instead of 200 metres per minute.
Fix: Speed is how much distance you cover in a unit of time, not just how far you went.
Parent and carer guide
Parents and carers can help by:- Choosing a safe route to cycle to school together
- Using a stopwatch or phone timer to measure how long the journey takes
- Measuring the distance with a map or GPS app
- Calculating speeds together using simple division
- Discussing who is fastest and why
- Encouraging children to try to improve their speed
Practice questions

FAQ
What is speed?
Speed is how fast something moves. It is found by dividing the distance it travels by the time it takes.
How do I measure speed when cycling?
You measure how far you go and how long it takes. Then divide the distance by the time to get your speed in metres per minute.
Why is speed important when cycling?
Speed helps you know how fast you're going, plan your journey, and compare how well you do with others.
Can I use speed to plan my journey to school?
Yes! If you know your speed and the distance to school, you can work out how long it will take you to get there.
What units do I use for speed?
Speed is usually measured in metres per minute or kilometres per hour. For this activity, we use metres per minute.
