Pokémon HP bars maths mission

A practical mini-mission using HP bars to practise fractions through questions, examples and child-friendly challenges.

Quick answer

You can use Pokémon HP bars to learn about fractions by seeing how much health is left in parts of a whole bar. For example, if an HP bar has 100 points and your Pokémon has 50 points left, that's half of the bar, or 1/2.

Learning outcome

By the end of this page, you will understand how to show Pokémon health using fractions and be able to solve simple fraction problems using HP bars.

  • You can tell what fraction of an HP bar is full
  • You can compare how much health different Pokémon have
  • You can add and subtract fractions when Pokémon take damage
  • You can use fractions to plan your Pokémon’s health strategy

Why this matters

Fractions help us understand parts of a whole, and that’s exactly what HP bars show! Whether you're playing Pokémon games, planning your Pokémon’s health, or even sharing snacks with friends, fractions help you know how much is left or how much you need. Learning fractions through Pokémon makes it fun and easy to understand.

How it works

HP bars show how much health your Pokémon has left. Let’s say a Pokémon starts with 100 HP. If it takes damage and now has 25 HP left, we can show that as a fraction:

  1. Start with the full HP bar = 100 points
  2. Current HP = 25 points
  3. Write the fraction: 25/100
  4. Simplify the fraction to its lowest terms: 1/4

So, your Pokémon has 1/4 of its health left. This helps you understand how much damage it has taken!

Examples you can see

Let’s imagine a Pokémon battle where you have two Pokémon:

HP Bar Examples
Pokémon Full HP Current HP Fraction of HP
Charizard 100 75 75/100 = 3/4
Blastoise 100 50 50/100 = 1/2
Venusaur 100 25 25/100 = 1/4

You can also use these examples to compare Pokémon health. Charizard has 3/4 of its health, which is more than Blastoise’s 1/2, and much more than Venusaur’s 1/4.

Try it as a mini adventure

Adventure: Pokémon Health Rescue Mission

You are on a mission to help your Pokémon team recover from a tough battle. Your team has 4 Pokémon, and each has a different amount of health:

  1. Charizard: 80/100 HP
  2. Blastoise: 40/100 HP
  3. Venusaur: 20/100 HP
  4. Pikachu: 60/100 HP

Your job is to:

  1. Write each Pokémon's health as a simplified fraction
  2. Find which Pokémon has the most health
  3. Calculate how much health Pikachu lost if it started with 100 HP

Let’s solve it together:

  1. Charizard: 80/100 = 4/5
  2. Blastoise: 40/100 = 2/5
  3. Venusaur: 20/100 = 1/5
  4. Pikachu: 60/100 = 3/5

Answer: Charizard has the most health (4/5). Pikachu lost 40 HP (100 - 60 = 40).

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Writing 25/100 as 2/10 instead of 1/4
Why it happens: Forgetting to simplify the fraction.
Fix: Always divide both the top and bottom by the same number to make it simpler.
  • Mistake: Thinking that 1/2 and 2/4 are different
Why it happens: Not knowing that fractions can be equal even if they look different.
Fix: Use visual HP bars or draw them to see that 1/2 = 2/4 = 50/100.
  • Mistake: Comparing fractions without the same denominator
Why it happens: Not knowing how to compare parts of a whole.
Fix: Make the bottom numbers the same (like 50/100 and 25/100) to compare easily.

Parent and carer guide

Help your child by:

  • Using real HP bars from Pokémon games or drawing them
  • Practising fractions with everyday examples like pizza slices or cookies
  • Letting them explain their thinking, even if they make a mistake
  • Encouraging them to draw or build HP bars to show fractions
  • Using simple language and keeping the activity fun and playful

Ask questions like:

  • “How much of your Pokémon’s HP bar is full?”
  • “Can you show me how to make 1/2 look like 2/4?”
  • “Which Pokémon has the most health?”

Don’t worry if they get confused at first – fractions are tricky, but with practice, they’ll get it!

Practice questions

  1. Write 30/100 as a simplified fraction.
  2. If a Pokémon has 60/100 HP, what is that as a simplified fraction?
  3. Which Pokémon has more health: one with 75/100 or one with 50/100?
  4. How much health did a Pokémon lose if it went from 90/100 to 45/100?
  5. Draw an HP bar that shows 1/5 of the health left.

Answers:

  1. 3/10
  2. 3/5
  3. 75/100 has more health
  4. 45 HP lost
  5. Draw a bar with 1/5 filled (20 points out of 100)

FAQ

What is a fraction?

A fraction is a way to show part of a whole. For example, if you eat 2 slices of a pizza that has 8 slices, you ate 2/8 of the pizza.

How do I simplify a fraction?

To simplify, divide both the top and bottom numbers by the same number. For example, 4/8 can be simplified to 1/2 because both 4 and 8 can be divided by 4.

Why do Pokémon use HP bars?

HP bars show how much health your Pokémon has. This helps you know when to heal it or when it’s time to switch Pokémon in a battle.

Can I use this to learn other math?

Yes! HP bars help you learn fractions, comparisons, addition, and subtraction. You can even learn about percentages and ratios!

What if I don’t play Pokémon?

No problem! You can still learn fractions using other examples like cakes, pizza, or even your own health bar during a game or sport!
