Rocket League save percentages maths mission

A practical mini-mission using save percentages to practise percentages through questions, examples and child-friendly challenges.

Quick answer

Save percentages in Rocket League show how often a player stops the ball from scoring. You can use percentages to work out how many saves were made out of all the shots faced.

Learning outcome

By the end of this page, you will be able to calculate and understand save percentages using real-world examples from Rocket League, and you will know how to work out how many saves were made from a given number of shots.

  • You can calculate how many saves were made from a number of shots using percentages
  • You can understand what a save percentage means in a game
  • You can compare different save percentages
  • You can use percentages to solve problems about games and sports

Why this matters

Save percentages help us understand how good a goalkeeper or player is at stopping the ball. In Rocket League, knowing save percentages helps players and fans see how well someone is playing. You can use percentages in many places – like how many of your friends like pizza, or how many of your toys you’ve played with today.

How it works

Save percentage is a way to show how many shots a player stops out of all the shots they face. To calculate it:

  1. Count how many shots were saved
  2. Count how many shots were taken
  3. Divide the number of saves by the number of shots
  4. Multiply the answer by 100 to get a percentage

For example, if a player saved 40 shots out of 50 shots, you would do:

40 ÷ 50 = 0.8

0.8 × 100 = 80%

So the save percentage is 80%.

Examples you can see

Imagine you are playing Rocket League and your friend plays as a goalkeeper. They face 20 shots in a match. They save 16 of them. What is their save percentage?

Step 1: Saves = 16

Step 2: Shots = 20

Step 3: 16 ÷ 20 = 0.8

Step 4: 0.8 × 100 = 80%

So your friend’s save percentage is 80%.

Let’s try another one: You played 10 matches and your save percentages were 75%, 85%, 90%, 70%, 80%, 85%, 95%, 75%, 80%, 85%. What was your average save percentage?

First, add them all up:

75 + 85 + 90 + 70 + 80 + 85 + 95 + 75 + 80 + 85 = 830

Then divide by 10:

830 ÷ 10 = 83%

Your average save percentage was 83%.

Try it as a mini adventure

Adventure: Rocket League Save Mission

You are a Rocket League player who wants to become the best goalkeeper. You have been tracking your saves for 5 matches. Here’s what happened:

Match 1: 20 shots, 16 saves

Match 2: 25 shots, 20 saves

Match 3: 15 shots, 12 saves

Match 4: 30 shots, 24 saves

Match 5: 10 shots, 8 saves

Now, calculate your save percentage for each match. What is your average save percentage across all 5 matches?

Step 1: Calculate each match:

Match 1: 16 ÷ 20 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Match 2: 20 ÷ 25 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Match 3: 12 ÷ 15 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Match 4: 24 ÷ 30 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Match 5: 8 ÷ 10 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%

Step 2: Add all percentages:

80 + 80 + 80 + 80 + 80 = 400

Step 3: Divide by 5:

400 ÷ 5 = 80%

Your average save percentage is 80%!

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Forgetting to multiply by 100 to get the percentage
  • Why it happens: They know how to divide but forget that a decimal needs to be turned into a percentage
  • Fix: Always remember to multiply by 100 after dividing
  • Mistake: Confusing saves with shots
  • Why it happens: They think they saved 16 shots out of 16 shots
  • Fix: Double-check which number is the saves and which is the total shots
  • Mistake: Adding percentages instead of finding an average
  • Why it happens: They add all percentages together and think that’s the average
  • Fix: Add the numbers, then divide by how many there are

Parent and carer guide

Help your child understand save percentages by playing a game. You can pretend to be a goalkeeper and take turns shooting at a goal. Count how many shots you take and how many you save. Then work out the percentage together. This makes the learning fun and real.

Ask questions like:

  • How many shots did we take?
  • How many did we save?
  • What percentage is that?

Encourage your child to explain how they worked out the answer. If they make a mistake, help them see the steps again, but don’t correct them too quickly. Let them try again.

Remember: It's okay if they don't get it the first time. Practice makes progress!

Practice questions

  1. If a player saved 30 shots out of 40, what is the save percentage?
  2. A goalkeeper faced 25 shots and saved 20. What is the save percentage?
  3. Player A saved 50 shots out of 60. Player B saved 45 shots out of 50. Who has the better save percentage?
  4. If you saved 15 shots out of 20, what is your save percentage?
  5. A player had save percentages of 70%, 80%, 90%, 75%, 85%. What is their average save percentage?

Answers

  1. 30 ÷ 40 = 0.75 → 0.75 × 100 = 75%
  2. 20 ÷ 25 = 0.8 → 0.8 × 100 = 80%
  3. Player A: 50 ÷ 60 = 0.833 → 83.3%
    Player B: 45 ÷ 50 = 0.9 → 90%
Player B has the better save percentage.
  4. 15 ÷ 20 = 0.75 → 0.75 × 100 = 75%
  5. 70 + 80 + 90 + 75 + 85 = 300 → 300 ÷ 5 = 60%

FAQ

What is a save percentage?

A save percentage shows how often a player stops the ball from scoring. It is a percentage of saves out of total shots.

Why do we use percentages in Rocket League?

Percentages help us compare how good players are at stopping the ball, even if they play different numbers of matches or face different numbers of shots.

How can I use save percentages in real life?

You can use save percentages to track how good you are at catching a ball, or how often you make it through a game or challenge.

Can save percentages be more than 100%?

No, save percentages can only go up to 100%. If you save all the shots, that’s 100%.

What if a player saves more shots than there were?

That can’t happen in real life. The number of saves must always be equal to or less than the number of shots.
