Maths in volleyball: team positions
Use space, direction and shapes in movement.
Quick answer
Maths in volleyball helps you understand where to stand, how to move, and how to work as a team using shapes, space, and direction.Learning outcome
By the end of this page, you will understand how to use shapes, space, and direction to find the best positions on the volleyball court. Success signs:- You can describe where players stand on a volleyball court using words like "front", "back", "left", "right"
- You can make a simple volleyball court layout using shapes
- You can move in the right direction to get to your position
- You can explain how teamwork uses maths to help the team win
Why this matters
Maths in volleyball helps you understand how to move your body in space, where to stand, and how to work together with your team. When you play volleyball, you're not just jumping and hitting the ball – you're using shapes, direction, and teamwork. This is useful for:- Playing better sports
- Understanding maps and directions
- Building things like houses or toys
- Working out how to get from one place to another
How it works
Volleyball players use maths to:- Find the right position on the court
- Move in the correct direction
- Use shapes to help them move better
- Where they are in relation to the ball
- Where they are in relation to their team
- How to get to the right spot quickly
Examples you can see
Let’s imagine you're playing volleyball with your friends. Here's how maths helps: Example 1: The Court Shape The volleyball court is a rectangle. It's 18 metres long and 9 metres wide. This means it has four sides and four corners. You can think of it like a big rectangle on the ground. Example 2: Team Positions In volleyball, there are 6 players on the court. They stand in different spots:- Two players are in the front row
- Two players are in the middle row
- Two players are in the back row
- If the ball is coming from your left, you might need to move to your right
- If the ball is coming from behind, you might need to move forward
- Circle – for where the ball will land
- Triangle – for where your teammate is
- Square – for your own position
Try it as a mini adventure
Adventure: Volleyball Team Challenge You are a volleyball player in a team. You need to find the best positions on the court to help your team win. Step 1: Draw a rectangle on the ground to be your volleyball court. Make it 18 metres long and 9 metres wide. Step 2: Place 6 toy balls or cones to be your players. Each player stands in a different row. Step 3: One player (the coach) says "Move to the front left!" and you have to move to the correct spot. Step 4: Try this with different directions:- Move to the back right
- Move to the middle
- Move to the front
Common mistakes
- Mistake: Thinking that front and back are the same.
Why it happens: Confusing front and back because they look similar.
Fix: Use your hands to show front (towards the net) and back (away from the net). - Mistake: Not knowing which side is left or right.
Why it happens: Not practicing with a friend or using your body to help.
Fix: Stand facing the net and say "my left" and "my right" to help you remember. - Mistake: Not understanding how to move in a straight line.
Why it happens: Thinking you can jump in any direction.
Fix: Practice walking in straight lines first, then try moving quickly.
Parent and carer guide
How to help your child at home:- Ask your child to show you where they would stand on a volleyball court
- Use a piece of paper to draw a simple court and mark positions
- Play a game where you call out directions like "move forward", "move left"
- Count how many times your child gets the direction right
- Encourage them to explain how they know where to go
- Does your child understand left and right?
- Can they move in the correct direction?
- Do they know how to describe where they are?
- They might mix up directions at first – that's normal!
- They might not get all the positions right – that's also normal!
- Don't push too hard – it's a fun learning game!
